How we traveled from to Thessaloniki by train

If you are a regular on our blog, you know that we like to travel to Greece. It’s a perfect place for a summer vacation. We also like to do a bit of sightseeing. This year we spend our beach vacation in Korinos and decided to visit Thessaloniki again.

In this post you will find out:

  • how to from the beach resorts to Thessaloniki by train
  • how to find the train station
  • ticket prices
  • train timetables

Traveling by car to Thessaloniki from any point in Northern Greece is a good option, since they have low toll rates, unlike Italy. Parking in Thessaloniki is difficult though so we decided to try the public transport options.

Buses from the beach resorts are difficult to find an not all the locals are familiar with them. There are organized transport options for tourists, but the are only once a week and are more expensive. So we decided to try the trains.

If you are staying at one of the seaside resorts, you can catch this train from either Korinos or Katerini train station.

The most recent timetables can be found on the TrainOSE website here: timetable

The information there is correct and up to date. There are at least 8 trains each day to Thessaloniki and back. This is a part of the Larissa – Thessaloniki line and it stops at Katerini and Korinos train station.

The train station

View from the Korinos train station

The train station in Korinos is at the center of the village. There is no dedicated building for ticket sales, only 2 stops for people to wait for the train to arrive. There is a parking nearby.

Tickets and prices

One-way ticket from Korinos to Thessaloniki is 6 EUR per person. There is a good saving if you buy a round ticket to Thessaloniki and back, so ask the personnel for it.

Arriving in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki’s famous White tower

The Thessaloniki Railway station is about 2 km away from the center of the city and the White tower. There are a few bus lines you can use to get to the center, but if you prefer walking like we did, it will take you about 15 minutes in a straight line to reach the center.

The last train from Thessaloniki back to Korinos or Katerini is around 21:30 so you can spend your whole day in Thessaloniki and do some sightseeing, shopping or try the local cuisine.
